In a discussion about Vrata, Tapa, Upavasa, brahmacharya and Atithiseva, Bhishma says that commoners fast for 15 days of the month and consider it an act of tapas. But that infact is an act of exploiting the body which is a medium of dharmik activities.
Furthermore, he states that the one who eats in the morning and evening alone, and doesnt consume anything in between, such a person is known as a practitioner of Nitya Upavasa.
