The nature of tamas and how it binds:  

Tamas is known to be born out of ignorance and deludes all embodied beings and binds them with insanity, laziness and sleep.<ref name=":2" /> <blockquote>तमस्त्वज्ञानजं विद्धि मोहनं सर्वदेहिनाम् । प्रमादालस्यनिद्राभिस्तन्निबध्नाति भारत ॥१४.८॥<ref name=":3" />
