Jyotisha, popularly called Astronomy, is one of the six Vedangas. However, in ancient times it dealt more with astronomy than predictive astrology. It had very significant applications since Vedic times. Jyotisha Shastra is basis for Indian Calendar and time keeping. Known as the Panchanga, the Indian Calendar has many significant astronomical aspects apart from being used in every life for fixing Muhurta or auspicious time to perform important things. It is mentioned in Vedas, Darshanas and even in Ayurvedic texts.
