इहेदमिति यतः कार्यकारणयोः स समवायः । वैशेषिक-७,२.२६
Kanada Rshi of Vaisheshika darshana, defined samavaya as the relation between the cause and the effect (according to the Vaisheshika school). Prashastapada defined it as the relationship existing between the substances that are inseparable, standing to one another in the relation of the container and the contained. The relation of samavaya is not perceivable but only inferable from the inseparable connection of the substances.

Its existence in this universe is recognized as essentially united association between 2 padarthas. Essentially united means when in between the 2, one padartha can not exist separately without the other then those are called as 'ayutsiddha'. For example, organ and the one whos organ is that (and made to function individually because then they wont work), action and the one who is performing that action can not be separated. Meaning: Samavaya is the inseparable relationship of dravya like bhumi etc with their guna (properties). This is eternal because whenever a dravya exists, it is not devoid of guna.
