Yagnyavalkya a great rishi of the vedic period, undertook a heterodox, rebellious experiment of separating the mantras of vaidika kriyas or ritual ordaining, injunctory part of the Veda, from their explicitly vedantic or philosophical parts, i.e. the [[Samhita|संहिता || Samhita]] and ब्राह्मणा || Brahmana parts.
