The Bhagavad Gita explains the concept of Shraddha with respect to the Trigunas. It says that Shraddha of people that is born of their individual natures, is three kinds viz. trividhā bhavati śraddhā dehināṁ sā svabhāvajā sāttvikī rājasī caiva tāmasī ceti tāṁ śr̥ṇu ॥17.2॥</blockquote>Sattva, Rajas and Tamas are together referred to as Trigunas. In Samkhya darshana, they refer to the three metaphysical properties that Prakrti or primordial nature is composed of and are different from the concept of Gunas in the Vaisheshika darshana. It is an interaction between these three Gunas that leads to manifestation of the material universe from the Trigunatmika Prakrti. Manas or mind that plays a key role in all experiences, by mediating between the senses and the intellect to convert simple impressions into preception, is one of the 25 tattvas that evolves from Prakriti. It is believed that the effect is of the same nature as the cause.<ref>Swami Sivananda (1999), [http://www.dlshq.org/download/hinduismbk.pdf All About Hinduism], Uttar Pradesh: The Divine Life Society.</ref> Therefore, the trigunas present in Prakrti as the three modes of material energy are also present in the mind as 3 types of its characteristics. However, they are found in varying proportions. Based on the predominent guna, the mind-type is classified as Sattvika, Rajasika or Tamasika that in turn influences one's emotions and behaviour.<ref><nowiki>https://dharmawiki.org/index.php/Trigunas_(त्रिगुणाः)</nowiki></ref>

Sattva, Rajas and Tamas are together referred to as Trigunas in Samkhya darshan, one of the six schools of Bharatiya tatvajnana. They are understood as three qualities or tendencies of an entity.

Since human emotions are largely dependent on the predominence of trigunas in one's mind, the typology of Shraddha, which is a firm belief, an emotion one has towards a deity, person or shastra, is also described as threefold in nature viz. Sattviki, Rajasi and Tamasi, based on one's individual nature.<ref>Dharm P. S. The association of the living entity with the different modes of nature has been going on perpetually; since the living entity is in contact with material nature, he acquires different types of mentality according to his association with the material modes. (BG As it is)
  −

  −
To understand the reflection of the Trigunas in the typology or types of Shraddha, lets delve a bit more on the concept of Shraddha itself.
  −

  −
At the core, Shraddha is an emotion. And Manas / mind is considered responsible for the experience of all emotions.
  −

  −
In fact, Manas plays a key role in all experiences. For, the sense organs are capable of perception only when they are associated with the mind.
  −

  −
As per the Samkhya philosophy the mind evolves from Prakrti (Nature, creative force that manifests into creation, the source of material manifestation).
  −

  −
Prakrti - Doer and Enjoyer; changing matter.
  −

  −
Purusha - unattached eternal consciousness, unchanging Self, sakshi
  −

  −
This Prakrti is made of the three Gunas namely Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. It is the interaction between these three Gunas that leads to Evolution.
  −

  −
Since the trigunas are inherent to prakrti that manifests as the creation, all the matter or material existence, including Manas, possess trigunas as everything evolved out of Prakrti.
  −

  −
In the context of Prakrti – trigunas are forms of material energy.
  −

  −
In the content of the mind – trigunas are 3 types of characteristics of the mind (Ayurveda)/(quality or innate tendencies) which is expressed in the Bhagavad Gita as,
  −

  −
These three guṇas are present in the material energy, and our mind is made from the same energy. Hence, all the three guṇas are present in our mind as well.
  −

  −
All the 3 gunas exists in a person’s mind. It is their predominance that influences human emotions and behaviour.
  −

  −
Hence, we see that human emotions are influenced by trigunas. Therefore, it is natural that Shraddha is also explained with respect to the trigunas in the Bhagavad Gita.
