The name of the village is in relation to the smallest image enshrined in the temple, Sirupuliyur, is located at a distance of 25 kms from Kumbakonam. The singular feature that characterises this august shrine is that the temple like Srirangam is facing south even as the Lord is comfortably reclined in Bhujanga sayana. Once a dense forest, the temple is located in the midst of green fields and silent streams against the backdrop of a blue sky. It also has a divine halo sanctified by heavenly connections.

This ancient shrine of Sirupuliyur is the abode of Mahavishnu known here as Arulma Kadal Amudan, the one as sweet as divine nectar. He is also known as Krupa Samudran - Ocean of Compassion. Sri Lakshmi is adored as Thirumamagal and as Dayanayaki here. The vimana, that stands above the sanctum is known as Vatla Vimana. While the pushkarni is known as Anantha pushkarni and Manasa pushkarni. The sthala vriksha here is the bilva tree.

Further, because the devotee's prayers are answered without an exception this place is very well known as Thapa Prasiddha Sthala. With his boundless qualities of mercy, the Lord is named as Krupa Samudhran. Not only ordinary mortals but even other devas like Brahma and Shiva have realised the Lord's compassion.
