Inscriptions on a relic vase of the stupa at Andher, the inkpot found during the excavations at Taxila are archeological evidences of use of carbon ink in ancient India. Red lead ore (hingula) was also used as a substitute for ink. Kharosti documents from Khatan prove the use of ink in 1st century C. E. Painted drawing and inscriptions are still found in the caves of Ajanta. Jains also used colored inks in their manuscripts. Professional writers called as lipikara and sasana lekhaka along with scholars and poets were writing on birch bark and palm leaves and used ink for their purpose.<ref name=":0" />
