== मात्राकाल ==
० The unit of time taken to pronounce one ह्रस्व स्वर is known as one मात्राकाल.

० So, ह्रस्व is pronounced in one मात्राकाल whereas दीर्घ स्वरऽ are pronounced in two मात्राकालऽ.

== लघु, गुरु संज्ञा ==
There are 3 सूत्रऽ in अष्टाध्यायी which define the संज्ञाऽ लघु and गुरु, for each स्वर.

० ह्रस्वं लघु (1-4-10) : ह्रस्व स्वरऽ get a संज्ञा/label called लघु.

० संयोगे गुरु (1-4-11): When a स्वर has a संयुक्ताक्षर following it, the स्वर gets a संज्ञा/label called गुरु.

० दीर्घं च (1-4-12) : दीर्घ स्वरऽ also get गुरु संज्ञा.

Note: A स्वर having अनुस्वार or विसर्ग following it gets गुरु संज्ञा.

Notation: लघु is denoted by an ardhachandra on top of it. Ex: अ᳴

गुरु is denoted by a horizontal stroke on top of it. Ex: आ᳒

== गण ==
गण means group.

In this context, गण is a group of three स्वरऽ.

Each of the three स्वरऽ in a गण can be either a लघु or a गुरु.

Hence there are 2*2*2=8 possible combinations of लघुऽ and गुरुऽ in a गण and each such combination forming a गण is given a name.

० If only the first स्वर is लघु, the गण is called यगण.

० If only the middle स्वर is लघु, the गण is called रगण.

० If only the last स्वर is लघु, the गण is called तगण.

== छन्दस् ==
श्लोकऽ are written in छन्दस् (meter). This is based on the number of स्वरऽ it consists of. Each श्लोक is divided into 4 parts called पादऽ.

In most शलोकऽ, all the पादऽ have equal number of स्वरऽ.

There are two types of छन्दस्: मात्राछन्दस् and अक्षरछन्दस्

मात्राछन्दस् is based on मात्राऽ and अक्षरछन्दस् is based on the number of स्वरऽ in each पाद. Currently we will consider only अक्षरछन्दस.

Based on the number of स्वरऽ in each पाद, अक्षरछन्दस् is classified as given in the table.

० वृत्तम्

== अक्षरछन्दस् ==
For each छन्दस्, based on different patterns of गणऽ in each पाद, different वृत्तऽ are defined. The definition of the वृत्त is given in the same वृत्त.

Eg: In अनुष्टुप् (8 स्वरऽ in each पाद),

० विद्युन्माला-वृत्तः मो᳒  मो᳒  गो᳒  गो᳒ वि᳒द्यु᳒न्मा᳒ला᳒

If each पाद has the pattern of two मगणऽ (- - -) followed by two गुरुऽ, then the वृत्त is named विद्युन्माला. Observe that the definition also has the same pattern.

Egः विद्युन्मालालोलान्भोगान् मुक्त्वा मुक्तौ यत्नं कुर्यात् ।

ध्यानोत्पन्नं निस्सामान्यं सौख्यं भोक्तुं यद्याकाङ्क्षेत् ।।

० माणवक-वृत्त: मा᳒ण᳴व᳴कं᳒ भा᳒त्त᳴लॅगाः᳒

Observe the गणऽ in this definition. They are भ (- u u) and त (- - u) and a लघु and a गुरु.

Eg :

माणवकक्रीडितकं यः कुरुते वृद्धवयाः ।

हास्यमसौ याति जने भिक्षुरिव स्त्रीचपलः ।।

== यति ==
In some वृत्तऽ, a pause has to be there in a पाद. This pause is called यति. This यति must end in a पद.

The यति has to come after certain number of स्वरऽ, depending on the वृत्त. for mentioning this number, a naming convention is used, as depicted in the following table.

Eg:

० क्षमा-वृत्तः तुरगरसयतिर्नौ ततौ गः क्षमा । In this वृत्त, there is a यति after तुरग (अश्व) which refers to 7 and then another one after रस which represents 6.

० मालिनी-वृत्तः ननमयययुतेयं मालिनी भोगिलोकैः । In this वृत्त, there is a यति after भोगि (नाग) which refers to 8 and then another one after लोक which represents 7.
