Long ago in Uttara Kosala region, seers from different places had gathered together for a yajna. There, the great Uddalaka is said to have invoked river Sarasvati who came there all the way from the Himalayas in order to facilitate the completion of the rshi's vow. As rshi Uddalaka contemplated upon river Sarasvati in his mind (Manas | मनस्) and she appeared, the river got the name Manorama.<ref name=":2" /><ref name=":1" />

It is mentioned in Mahabharata, Shanti Parva, Chapter 57, Stanza 10, that Uddalaka expelled his son Shvetaketu from the house because the son was a hater of Brahmanas.<ref name=":1" />
